Maryland’s watermelon harvest is well under way. Time to enjoy an ice cold slice of local goodness!
Maryland’s farmers produced about 3,700 acres of melons in 2018, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The melons are sold direct to consumers through farmers markets and farmstands. Also, many of the melons are sold through distributors which ship the melons fresh to your favorite grocery store.
An organization of Maryland and Delaware farmers, Mar-Del Watermelon Association annually promote the produce with a Queen chosen during the winter at the organization’s convention in Cambridge. This year’s Queen Leslie Webb offers ‘Quarantine with the Queen’ on Facebook with recipes https://www.facebook.com/138491412841860/videos/234788881043776/
